ARNSIDE is a small and unspoilt seaside resort in Cumbria. Situated on the estuary where the River Kent enters Morecambe Bay, Arnside has a long history of sailing, and regattas were held here in Victorian times.
 
The arrival of the railway in 1857 saw a boom in ‘well-to-do’ Victorian holiday makers taking advantage of Arnside’s seaside position. The railway line is carried over the River Kent on the iconic viaduct spanning 505m long, which was rebuilt in 1915.
 
As an estuary of Morecambe Bay, low tide uncovers miles of sand but tides turn quickly as the “tidal bore”, a dangerous and swift high tide, comes racing up the River Kent. 
 
This view faces almost directly north, across the estuary showing the railway viaduct towards Meathop, with both the Whitnarrow National Nature Reserve and the Lake District National Park rising up in the distance.
